The Amavasya or New Moon day in the month of March (Maasi / Kumba Maasa – மாசி / கும்ப மாஸ) occurs on 08 March 2016. There also occurs a Solar Eclipse (ஸூர்ய க்ரஹணம்) during the new moon, which will be partially (about 40%) visible from most of India – except for the swath from Gujarat to Kashmir.
The actual timing of the Solar Eclipse is on 09 March 2016 from about 06:24 IST to 06:49 IST. If lucky, people of Chennai have a chance of experiencing a 16% obscured Sun on the morning of Wednesday, 09 Mar 2016. The tharpanam is recommended to be performed between that time.
The Sun’s transition from Kumba Rasi to Meena Rasi (மீன மாஸம் / ராசி), that the birth of the Tamil month Panguni (பங்குனி) is to occur on 14 Mar 2016.
