Everyone who keeps his eyes and ears open, very well know after the backlash against the Facebook’s internet.org inititative, they quietly changed the title to Free Basics and tried to push the same old poisoned wine in a new bottle. At least I thought so. Thus it was amusing to see several ‘friends’ on Facebook, signing the petition to TRAI in support of Free Basics. If you are one, and wish to undo your misdeed after reading this, go to last paragraph after the image.
The sting the tail is that most (almost all?) of these Free Basics supporters, signed the petition a few months back for Net Neutrality, and against Internet.org to the same TRAI. So what has changed in just a few months for these people to changed their minds? Nothing.
I don’t like to say it, but have to. Those who signed for Net Neutrality (in support) a few months back, and have signed for Free Basics now, have been blindsided – either one of their friends have signed it (and FB tells them so), or it is so easy to sign the email with just a click.
So if you have already did the (mis)deed, how can you correct it? There are 3 ways to correct it.
1) Share this post.
2) Go to http://www.savetheinternet.in/ sign & send the counter email.
3) Just to stick it to FB, do the next step.
Open up [https://www.facebook.com/savefreebasics?notif_t=iorg_trai_submission], modify the words in the boxes as below & hit send – use FB to eff FB. (just copy paste the sented in block letters in relevant boxes).

I DO NOT support Free Basics in India

To the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Facebook has used its own platform to push its users to lobby for Free Basics . Some of them have been misled into believing they are supporting net neutrality. This is different from a person independently going to a website, filling in their name and email address and sending a response. The key difference here is user choice. This is the same user choice which is absent in Free Basics (formerly internet.org) or any other zero rated service. Thank You.
