The most horrible feature of the Microsoft Windows 10 is the way Windows updates are delivered. First irritant is there is no way to stop the automatic updates, unlike what we are used to in past Windows XP, 7, 8 or 8.1. The Second major irritant is that even drivers for other 3rd party hardware *have* to be delivered and installed through the bleeding Windows 10 Update.
In case a user attempts to update a 3rd Party driver on his/her own, it simply breaks down. It happened to me just before the weekend. I saw that the NVIDIA GE Force Driver has been updated with version 355.82, specially for Windows 10. The last version that I had glanced at (probably 355.53) NVIDIA did not specify a Windows 10 x64 purpose built driver.
Happily I downloaded the NVIDIA 355.82-desktop-win10-64bit-international, and attempted to update. Lo and behold, the update failed to install spectacularly. Not only did it fail, it managed to crash the existing 355.53 driver too. Result? A garish screen so awkward to use, with texts running out of the screen.
Then started the real headache. The Windows 10 updates too refused to do its thing with the NVIDIA update – except throw out error messages. As they say there are many ways to kill a cat, and at least one way to hack and force Windows – even Windows 10 – to do what we want. Boot into Safe Mode.
BTW, booting into Safe Mode in Windows 10 is not a Tic-Tac-Toe anymore; instead it is more like playing Twister.
The easiest is to Shift + Restart >> Trouble Shoot >> Advanced Options >> Startup Settings >> Restart >> Type 4 or 5 or 6 to Select one of the three Safe Mode options. There is option 7 which says ‘Disable Driver Signature Enforcement’, but I did not dare try it out today. Remember, THAT is the easiest way to boot into Safe Mode!
Anyway, once in Safe Mode, the NVIDIA 355.82-desktop-win10-64bit-international installed without a problem, and the screen, once more is bearable. Oh, the Windows Update also stopped showing the error for NVIDIA updates. There is Windows Defender Update failure, but that is another story.
Here is the mashup of the earlier Update history with the string of failures and the yesterday’s successful update in Safe Mode.
