The British never thought that imposing a miniscule Tax on Salt could crystalize (pun unintended) the whole nation to earn for freedom, liberty and independence. The famous 24 day, 240 mile Salt March from Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad to the costal village of Dandi in March-April 1930, was the successful turning point in the Indian Independence struggle, and makes up the Google Doodle for India Independence Day 2015.
With the Dandi March, for the first time in a decade, a successful non-violent, and tax resistance action was enacted. Over 80,000 people were arrested all over the British India, and suddenly the nation was galvanized.
The Doodle for the 69th Independence Day in 2015 can also be perceived as a reminded to the Narendra Modi regime. Over the last 1-1/2 years of his rule, the people close to, or surrounding the PM Narendra Modi, have attempted to paint every questioning, dissenting, argument as an anti-national voice.
The attempted prohibition on manufacture of Salt by Indians, and a tax on salt sold by the colonial masters, had evoked feelings of disgust and rebellion within the population. Gandhiji successfully exploited the simmering discontent to solidify the people under a common flag against the British.
69 years later, the ruling BJP party has imposed several bans – Beef, Noodles, NGOs, Books, Documentaries, Films, Gmail, 'Bombay', Uber ,German and French language teaching, Good Friday , Members of Parliament, and even for a couple of days adult sites on the world wide web. I wonder just how much resentment, disgust, and disillusionment is stirring in the heart of the citizens.
