8 March 2015 is the International Women’s Day, and it seems Google punted the Nirbhaya issue with its Doodle for the day.
Google’s doodle today presents the many professions the women of today practice – starting from top left, the women of today are represented by a computer whiz kid, a judge, a botanical scientist, medical doctor.
The 2nd row from right to left have a chef, sportswomen, teacher, astronaut, artist, a chemical engineer, who also make up the word Google.
The bottom row from left to right has an astronomer, musician, rescue person and a writer – roles that were once the sole preserve of men.
I would have been very happy, if a woman cinematographer had also been depicted, a tongue-in-cheek poke for the freedom of expression, solidarity with Leslie Udwin, and her documentary India’s Daughter on the Nibhaya rape which shook the nation.
Incidentally did you know that the first (National) Women’s Day was observed in USA on 28 February 1909, promulgated by the Socialist Party of America? I did not, till today!
