If 2014 started off as a Amavasya day, in 2015 there is some confusion about the Makara Ravi (மகர ரவி) or Thai Masa Pirappu (தை மாத பிறப்பு) Tharpanam. The confusion occurs because the Tamil month of Thai begins on 14 January 2015, at 19:26 IST as per drik panchang (திருக்கணிதம்) or at 21:53 IST as per vakya panchang (வாக்ய பஞ்சாங்கம்).
Now everyone knows that Tharpanam should not be done in the nights. And the usual procedure is to perform the Tharpanam after Madhyanikam, that is around 12:00 noon (or as per convenience). So when is the Makara Ravi Tharpanam to be performed?
The Makara Ravi or Thai Masa Pirappu Tharpanam has to be performed on 15 January 2015, the Pongal Day, *before* the Makar Sankaranthi or Pongal Pooja. So the ideal time is just after Yamagandam which ends at 07:30 IST. [See the article about ideal time for cooking Pongal and Makar Sankaranti Pooja]
