Sri Bharati Tirtha Shankaracharya Swami, the 36th Sankaracharya of the Sringeri Math, Mangalore, has announced that Sri Kuppa Venkateshwara Prasada Sharma would be his successor-designate (Shishya Sweekaram).
He made this announcement at a public function in Sringeri, Karnataka, on Sunday 4th January 2015, during the function was held to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sankaracharya assuming charge as the Peethadhipati or head of the Mutt.
Sringeri Sharada Peetha is the southern Advaita Vedanta Mutt or monastery established by Adi Shankara in 8th century AD. The mutt is on the banks of the Tunga River in Chikkamagalur district, Karnataka, India, about 100 km from Mangalore.
The Shishya Sweekara ceremony will take place in Sringeri on January 22 and 23. The Sankarachaya will initiate the successor-designate into Sannyasa on 23 January 2015.
