Best System Cleaner 2014-2015

Back in July 2014, the surprise package in the Best System Cleaner test was Glary Utilities 5.3, which managed to out perform CCleaner 4.15, as revealed in the review of the Top 4 System Cleaners of 2014.  As we neared the end of the year, I decided to test out the latest versions of CCleaner and Glary Utilities to confirm the status.

Both CCleaner and Glary Utilities have been updated with new interface.  While the choice of colours and icons in CCleaner looks garish, the Glary Utilities sports a very aesthetic look.  Thankfully, both are as easy to use as ever.  Let us have a look at:
  • Glary Utilities 5.15.0.28 (portable)
  • CCleaner 5.01.5075 (installed)
    • additionally CCleaner had the Winapp2.ini 5.01.141218 from [www.winapp2.com]

Glary Utilities

Glary Utilities 5.15.0.28 is once again surprised me, for the wrong reason.  Back in July Glary Utilities 5 is the most improved product among the top system cleaners.  End of December Glary Utilities appears to have taken a slight step back.  What I had initially was the 5.14 version, and just for fun I ran a scan with it, before scanning with 5.15.

Glary Utilities 5.15 counted only ~528 MB of junk, while a few minutes before version 5.14 counted ~546 MB of clutter.  Which is quite abnormal.  We normally expect a new version to be more thorough, not less capable than its earlier version.

CCleaner

My once favourite system cleaner looks set to take back its place.  CCleaner 5.01 with Winapp2.ini has a ‘metro’ style interface, garish IMHO, but as intuitive as before.  Clicking on the various check-boxes offers us tremendous choice over the actions.  Clicking the Analyse button shows us the various files selected for cleaning.  Though the learning curve is steep, CCleaner is the most detailed junk file cleaner around.

Here the CCleaner 5.01 displays 1,405 MB of files that can be cleaned – which is almost thrice the amount of junk spotted by Glary Utilities.  The 1 grouse which still remains is it does not display the ‘total’ file count.

The Results

Both CCleaner 5.01 and Glary Utilities 5.14 performed exactly as promised.  Glary Utilities cleaned out all the ~526 MB of clutter, and then the CCleaner spotted a further ~883 MB worth removal.

Summary

While it is not time to discard Glary Utilities 5.15 - its one click maintenance is a very quick and safe method to get back a fairly quick PC, the CCleaner 5.01 gets back its rank as the Number Uno of Sytem File Cleaners in my PC.
