There come a few occasions in life on which we look back later and say, ‘Oh! yes. That was significant.’ There are even fewer occasions when we realise the special moment even as we experience it - only much later do we realise the prudence or the folly of it.
Those two parables, perhaps, apply only to the pre-internet, pre-android, pre-camera-phone generation, or the people without those gadgets today. The selfie culture has ensured that every moment, whether significant or not - from a disgusting food-in-the-mouth scene at a restaurant, to an equally atrocious one at a memorial, - is recorded for posterity, and be viewed a million times a day.
One can even ensure his/her own funeral with a selfie, as a Polish couple proved last Saturday by falling off the cliff in Cabo de Roca, Portugal.
So, whether it is a folly or fame, here is a snapshot of the total pageviews as counted by Blogger this morning. Sometime during the night of 11 August 2014, India time, this blog crossed a milestone - One Million pageviews in all.
That’s a long, long way from the early days - when I used to literally plead, nay beg - friends, colleagues, neighbours, and relatives to read what I had posted - and used to count 10 pageviews in a week.
Not that I blame them. People generally flock with fame, or to a brilliant marketing plan, and not to an upstart.
I mean, who would want to take a selfie with me, whether at a wedding, funeral or restaurant? OTOH, if it is the adorable Helle Thorning Schmidt, even Presidents and Prime Ministers would flock for a selfie. But then taking a selfie at a memorial, even if it is with David Cameron, is a hundred times better than dancing at one, a la, Suhsma Swaraj.
:-P
For now, I am going to dance a little jig, to celebrate the One Million pageviews of my blog. Sorry no selfies or YouTube videos of the jig! That certainly would not attract one million pageviews.
The next target? Convert the next million pageviews into a million dollars!
