India Independence Day Google Doodle

Today, Google released a beautiful, reminiscent Doodle, for the Indian Independence Day.  It was in definite contrast to the derisive Doodle put up yesterday for the Pakistani Independence Day.

The Doodle for India depicts the postage stamp issued on 21 November 1947 to commemorate the first independence day that year, along with the cancellation stamp and envelope.

Denoting the continuing administration, governance, and connectivity of the continuing Indian Union after the partition and independence, the Google is a reminder to all the citizens about the continuing excellence of our young, yet, ancient nation.

Here is the Doodle in its splendour.

The doodle can be seen in the Google India home page, and probably anyone from India accessing the Google homepage.

Trivia:  The stamp pictured is priced at a full, 3-1/2 annas, (pun intended), and meant to be used for overseas posts.

While we are not used to the currency denomination anna, after the decimalisation of currency in 1957, the remnants of the term ‘anna’ is still in colloquial use today.

In Tamil, and in Hindi (& probably is every language), the 25 paise coin is still referred to as 4-anna (நாலணா, चव्वन्नी ), and the 50 paise coin as 8-anna (எட்டணா, अट्टनी).
