I am happy to announce that the Upakarma (Avani Avittam - ஆவணி அவிட்டம்) 2014 mantras and procedure has been proof-read (99%) at mid-day today. We have another 6 to 8 hours of work, of assimilation and formatting, before the release to the public - one paper to unite them all.
It has been a massive effort, with a unique aim, and with user convenience in mind - even if I say so myself.
the effort:
Perhaps we left it a little late, but over last 2 to 3 weeks, it has been a tiring, hectic work schedule to type out the mantras in Tamil, Sanskrit and in English (IAST). The effort was so draining, my ophthalmologist advised me to lay off PC work for a couple of days, and prescribed application of eye drops to continue through August.
the aim:
Instead of people hunting around frantically for Iyer, Iyengar, Rig, Yajur (and Sama Veda) procedure, why not produce a single document which specifies all the procedures? Mind you, it is not modifying, altering, or creating a new, common procedure!
What I realised was the core mantras or procedure for everyone is the same. It is the ‘extra-fittings’ or additions which vary. Thus the unique idea or aim was to assemble all the procedures (or at least the major ones), and apply the IF-THEN-ELSE-GOTO technique used in computer programs.
So, what we have is different coloured texts. Plum/Violet for common procedure for all, Blue for Iyers, Pink for both Iyengars, Orange for only Vadakalai, Red for only Thenkalai, etc. So, perusing the document, an Iyer can proceed only with Blue and Plum, while the Iyengars can go with Plum and Orange/Red, ignoring the Blues.
IF Iyers, THEN do Blue/Plum, ELSE Iyengars, do Orange/Plum, and Rig Vedis GOTO Annex instead. Does that not sound unique, simple, meaningful and effective?
On a printed paper, it becomes even more effective - a sketch pen and 10 minutes of redacting will solve everyone’s problems, while satisfying everyone.
the convenience:
Keeping the user convenience in mind, (and the tiring effort we put in), I have decided to release 2 versions of this procedure, though both are complete.
The ‘basic’ or ‘free’ version will be complete, equivalent of the scanned pages of last year, better in many respects, and free. It will contain the complete procedure, but the basic mantras (like acamanam, pranayamam etc.) will not be given in full - exactly like last year’s. It will also not contain the procedure information, the how-to part. Basically if you know the (supposed to be) day to day mantras, and know the how-to/what-to of others, there should be no problem at all. And it will be available only in Tamil.
The ‘premium’ version will be the best such document on upakarma. It will be a PDF file, divided into sections for samida-dhanam, kamokarsheet japam, brahma-yagnyam, mahasankalpam, yagyopaveetha-dharanam, vedarambam - each in its own page or pages. It will contain the mantras in full, along with the how-to/what-to in simple English, side-by-side (but no drawings, in 2014). It will be available in Tamil, English and Sanskrit.
Similarly, the Gayathri Japam procedure is also being released - probably by tonight.

Here is a snapshot of the difference between the basic (left) and premium (right) versions.
Well! Off to 8 more hours of slogging - it will probably stretch to 10 hours or more.
;-)
PS: The hundred or so who encouraged us over last few months by contributing a few dollars (through the PayPal button) would be sent the Premium version, gratis, by tomorrow.
PS2: I have removed the PayPal button a couple of days back :-D
