After spending $11 billion dollars, to be humiliated 7-1 would be a big blow for the Brazilian fans. Its impact on Brazilian politics, and President Dilma Rousseff may be devastating. The German win will have its own impact. Surely now, the German President Angela Merkel would skip the proposed meet with our PM Narendra Modi. To add to the confusion the stopover by Narendra Modi was originally planned at Frankfurt, and changed to Berlin at the request of the Germans!
The only thing I can say about the 7-1 defeat handed out by Germany to Brazil is that my MS Excel based calculation predicted it. But neither the spreadsheet, nor me, or anyone else could have imagined the stunning score line. A Blitzkrieg it was, with 4 goals in just six minutes.
The statistics speak for themselves. It is not as if it was one of Germany’s best ever finishes. It is also one of Brazil’s worst humiliation ever.
Surely, Argentina must be shivering with anxiety now.

- Germany scored their first 5 goals in nineteen minutes of each other - from the Thomas Mueller goal at 11th minute to Sami Khedira’s in 29th minute.
- Miroslav Klose set the record for most World Cup Finals goals - right now at 16, pushing past Brazil’s Ronaldo with 15 World Cup goals.
- It was Germany’s biggest World Cup win since routing Saudi Arabia 8-0 in 2002 - in a group match.
- It was Brazil’s biggest ever defeat, surpassing the 6-0 loss to Uruguay in 1920 in the South American championship.
- Till today, Brazil’s biggest World Cup loss was 3-0 to France in the 1998 final.
- It’s also Brazil’s 1st loss in a competitive match on home soil since 1975 (to Peru 1-3).
- Brazil’s last defeat at a home game was in a friendly with Paraguay in 2002.
Surely, Argentina must be shivering with anxiety now.
