India today successfully launched the trust and reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) on its C23 mission - ‘C’ indicates that it is a commercial launch - with 5 satellites injected into precise orbits, from the spaceport at SriHariKota range (SHAR).
The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi was present, taking immense pleasure at the successful launch by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The biggest and main satellite to be injected by PSLV-C23 was the 714-kg remote-sensing satellite, SPOT-7, from France. The other 4 co-passengers were smaller in size - the 14-kg AISAT from Germany; NLS7.1 (CAN-X4) and NLS7.2 (CAN-X5) from Canada, each weighing 15 kg, and the seven-kg VELOX-1 of Singapore.
The 49-hour countdown, for the launch of PSLV-C23 began at 8.52 a.m. on 28 June, 2014. The launch vehicle was to originally lift off at 09:49 IST on 30 June, but the launch was put off by three minutes to 09:52 IST to avoid space debris which may cross the path of the vehicle.
