Today morning out on a walk, I happened to see a lot of uniformed girls and women rushing to work. As it was unusual to see the young ones rushing out so early in the day, I was puzzled. Till I remembered that the pretty young ones in uniform work in a famous jewellery store or another, and today being Akshaya Tritiya day, have been called in early.
Akshaya Tritiya in 2014 falls on two days - the 1st of May and also on the following day. In fact, the Tritya thithi begins at 12:13 IST on 1st May and lasts till 12:57 IST on 2nd May, and it is perhaps greed on the part of the jewellers to call the working women so early, or entice the gullible public into buying Gold and Silver well before the actual Akshaya Tritiya.
But then, as written over years, Akshaya Tritiya has deteriorated into a profitable plenty day, for the jewellers certainly, whether or not for the consumers!
Traditionally, in Tamil homes, Akshaya Tritiya is the auspicious day when people buy a kilo of Rice, Dal, Salt and several grams of Turmeric. Gold or jewellery is not particularly sought after, unless there is an upcoming event like a marriage or other occasions which require to do so. People also traditionally donate (new) clothes or food on this day.
So what are the best times to buy the Rice, Dal etc., or even Gold, if you still are in the mood? The best times to buy during Akshaya Tritiya 2014 is between 12:30 to 13:30 and 18:30 to 19:30 IST on 1st May 2014. On 2nd May, the auspicious time is believed to be between 09:30 to 10:30 IST.
