1984 riots - Case thrown out by US Judge

A federal judge in New York dismissed and closed a lingering case against the Indian National Congress for its alleged role in the 1984 riots - in the aftermath of the death of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

It was one of the most shameful acts in the independent India, along with the Godhra riots of 2002, and the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, which have claimed the lives of several thousand innocent citizens.

Irrespective of our political beliefs and leanings, there is no doubt such rioting and large scale hooliganism and killings should not find a room in modern India.  Equally firm should be our trust and belief in the Indian Judicial system.  Indians should never agree or accept a foreign judicial system to intervene in matters which are entirely internal to India.  Close to 67 years have passed from the time we decided not to allow 'others' to run our lives, or tell us how, what, when, to do.

The latest news from New York should be greeted with cheer by all the Indians, when the Federal Judge Robert Sweet dismissed the lawsuit brought against the Congress party by the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) advocacy group.

In the judgement, Judge Sweet ruled against the SFJ’s claim to be “legal representatives” in the case filed under the Alien Tort Statute (ATS) of the U.S.

Second, the judge found that the ATS did not extend to corporate defendants such as the Congress Party and that the SFJ’s claim constituted “an impermissible extraterritorial application of the ATS”.

Wonder how will the same ‘Sikhs for Justice’ goons react, if some Chinese sue the SFJ or their supporters for alleged atrocities by the Sikh members of the Shanghai Municipal Police, when Shanghai was under British rule!
