Will present Low Pressure become Cyclone Madi

A low pressure over Southeast Bay of Bengal approximately 365 NM East-Southeast of Colombo has brought much needed rain to the Southern Tamil Nadu.  It has even blessed the Chennai Metro with rains.

The low pressure area is expected to deepen by Wednesday 4th December and become a depression by the 6th December. Whether the depression will intensify further and develop into a full fledged cyclone will become clearer in the next 48 hours.

If at all the low pressure actually forms into a Tropical Cyclone, it will be allotted the name ‘Madi’.  As per convention the next cyclone is to be named from the list of names provided by the Maldives.  Though the models peg the chances for a cyclone formation as low, it does not matter.

All that matters is for the low pressure or depression to linger on for the next few days to shower steady rain on the Tamil land.  Though most of the Indian subcontinent has had sufficient or excessive rainfall during the Monsoon, my home state TN still suffers a deficiency.

So, Cyclone 06B Madi or not, bring on the much required rains.
