WhatsApp Messenger is not much different from the normal SMS, but on a smartphone, it offers some extras which makes it worthwhile. Even for people like me who is not exactly a texting fiend, it is great especially for international messaging.
Being the cheapskate I am, was thinking of switching over to the free WeChat or Tango once the 1 year free service on WhatsApp comes to an end - which is around this time of the year.
While I am yet to try WeChat, the experience with Tango has been excellent. Except for the video calling feature which buggered up the calls, probably due to the lack of 3G end-to-end connection. Or perhaps it was the by-now out-dated hardware of my Samsung Galaxy Y Duos. However, voice calls on Tango were excellent - even international calls.
This weekend was set aside to search for a suitable - meaning free - alternative to WhatsApp, but which turned out to be unnecessary this morning. A notification from WhatsApp informed me that the service has been extended by an year, for free, till 25 Nov 2014. That’s great, and very kind of WhatsApp. I guess Deepavali came a week early for me this year.
