Get Google+ Custom URL in 5 easy steps

About an year back, Google plus started to allot custom URLs to verified celebrities and brands.  Custom URL is nothing but a short, easily remembered URL, associated with the Google ID name (usually).

For eg., till today my Google+ profile was a stupid 21 digit number 115330299505403115512.  Imagine remembering or reciting it to someone for circling.

But today morning, Google offered the opportunity to claim my own custom URL.  That custom URL is simple and straightforward.  https://plus.google.com/+madmadrasi.  Does that not make life much easier?

Then again, mad.madrasi is an unique ID and would not have problem is acquiring that URL even 6 months later.  But think of a name like ‘John Smith’ or ‘Periasami’.  How long before the good ones are grabbed and the user ends up with a lame one like +Periasami123.

Such custom URLs are now being rolled out to (almost) everyone. If you don’t see the invite yet, don’t worry.  They are expanding the rollout over the coming week.

Is there a catch?  Yes, there are a few.  The profile should meet (all of) the following criteria:
- Has a profile photo,
- Has at least 10 followers (Have you in Circles), and
- Has an account that's at least 30 days old.

So here are the steps to claim your own Custom URL in Google plus.

As I said, this Deepavali, gifts seem to be turning up early.
