Cyclone 02B Phailin hitting Indian coast

Cyclone Phailin is approaching the Odisha coast, at/near Gopalpur and is likely to hit the coast between 6 pm to 8 pm this evening, as per LK Rathore, DG Cyclone Centre.

Wind speeds have reportedly reached 150 kph in Gopalpur with the region already experiencing heavy rains. Wind speeds may hit 235 kmph at the time of landfall, he said, adding that the storm surge will be around 3–3.5m. Moderate rainfall is likely to continue in Odisha for the next week.

The IMD official also cautioned the media saying US agencies have been over estimating the cyclone strength.

I don’t know whether the US JTWC, NRL or Jeff Masters’ with his wonderful coverage of Cyclone 02B Phailin is exaggerating the threat, but it is better to be cautious rather than careless in these events.

More than 400,000 people have been evacuated as per news reports, and my prayers are with them and others who are in the harms way.

Here is a latest satellite image of Cyclone 02B Phailin approaching the Indian coast from the US Naval Research Laboratory.  Satellite image of the cyclone 02B Phailin at around 1200 Z (or UTC) which makes it 17:30 IST.
