Have you ever wondered what exactly are the 21 leaves and 21 flowers used during the Ganesh Chaturthi or Pillayar Chaturthi pooja?
For Ganesha Chaturthi Puja one should procure the leaves and flowers of twenty-one different plants, trees and shrubs. This is called Ekavimshati Patra and Pushpa Puja.
Just using the internet, I thought that all those 21 leaves and 21 flowers for Pillayar Puja would be well documented now. But I am wrong.
Not only that the information on all the 21 leaves and 21 flowers for Ganesh Chaturthi is unavailable, in some pages, no doubt due to eagerness of other bloggers, the information is misleading.
Just one e.g., is Macheepatram is described as the Dharba or Kusa grass, when Machi or Machee Patram is actually Artemisia vulgaris, commonly known as Mugwort and in Tamil as தவனம்.
So put the record straight here are the correct names of the 21 leaves and 21 flowers for Ganesh Chaturthi pooja, in original Sanskrit (transliterated to English), Tamil names, Botanical names, and the Common names.
The fact is even I cannot get some of the leaves or flowers, at Chennai. For now, here is a snapshot of my handwritten notes.
