Test Cricket unwritten 150 Over Rule

Watching Test Cricket especially #Ashes over the last few months, have convinced me that there is an as yet unwritten (by MCC or ICC) rule which still holds true in Test Cricket.

The Rule is ‘If a team does not bat for 150 overs, the Match cannot be Won or Drawn’.

This rule, as I term it the mad.madrasi rule, sort of solidified when India toured England and Australia, were beaten so soundly, and led to the retirement of one of the greatest batsmen of (Test) Cricket - Rahul Dravid.

I had expressed it verbally to my circles at that time and again, after.  But stating a rule, as such, cannot be done, with one team or one series.  Thus I was waiting for The Ashes.

Now, with 2 tests down and the 3rd in limbo with Ashes 2013, I can confidently state the rule as obvious.

No doubt cricket gurus (not that I am one) will pick it up soon enough, as I have already hashtagged the rule in my Facebook posts/reply.

Here is the copy/paste from my facebook replies (edited for clarity):

Any team incapable of batting for 150 overs / innings in Test Match cannot win (or save) the match.
1st Test, Nottingham: England Won!
  • 1st INN -
    • ENG 59 overs all out;
    • AUS 64 overs all out;
  • 2nd INN -
    • ENG *150* overs all out;
    • AUS *111* overs all out.
2nd Test, Lord's: England Won!
  • 1st INN -
    • ENG 100 overs all out;
    • AUS 54 overs all out;
  • 2nd INN -
    • ENG *114* overs declared;
    • AUS 90 overs all out.
3rd Test, Old Trafford : (rain) Draw.
  • 1st INN -
    • AUS 146 overs declared;
    • ENG 139 overs all out;
  • 2nd INN -
    • AUS 36 overs, declared;
    • ENG 21 overs, rain spoils play.
As we all know, Australia had upper hand at Old Trafford, though Rain has played spoiler.
Nothing sums up The Ashes 2013 as much as this Chris ‘Roy’ Taylor cartoon.
