The venerable Mahavishnu of Mount Road has finally decided to grace the people of Chennai (and Tamil Nadu) with a Tamil edition.
Expected to be launched in September, The Hindu is seriously scooping subscribers with a 43% off from cover price offer - for the first 6 months. Update: The first issue of Tamil 'The Hindu'is scheduled for 9th Sep 2013 - the Ganesh Chaturthi Day has been postponed to 16th Sep 2013.
At a cover price of Rs. 3/- or so, it would be well placed to make a move into the Tamil Newspaper market - *one* of the few markets to show growth.
But it is not going to be easy, for unlike the English Newspaper market in TN, the Tamil Newspaper niche is already well covered in identifiable segments.
The Hindu, Tamil edition has to take head-on the 3 dominant behemoths - Dinamalar, Daily Thanthi and Dinakaran.
The Dinamalar is sometimes spoken of as the Tamil Hindu - with its readers taken to be the same sober, sincere and thoughtful folks.
The Daily Thanthi or DinaThanthi is in a class of its own. Catering to the raw news segment full of titillation, raunchiness, it has die hard readers, who could not care less for others (papers).
The Dinakaran, from the Sun group, is the most recent of the behemoths, and has attracted a readership on its own (apart from the DMK sympathizers), with its attractive marketing and positioning.
If the Tamil newspaper from The Hindu tries to be a literal Tamil edition of its English version, it can safely be written-off. If it tries to do a India Today Tamil edition with high language, it again can be written-off.
The promotional pamphlet which has been in circulation for a month or so now is full of promise. Sixteen pages catering to the news - from TN Headlines on first page to Editorial on 8th and Sports on 15, it looks like a well thought out spread.
The number of promised supplements are also good - about 9 in number - from Real Estate, Lifestyle, Health to Education, and even Kollywood and Bollywood news.
A still snapshot
Will The Hindu Tamil become as good as its English version?
My naughty half natters, ‘Only time will tell, and The Times (of India) will be watching.’
My curious half calls out, 'Will the Race Tips be as good as in English edition?'
