Calibre e-book manager software 1.0. released

Calibre by +Kovid Goyal is a free and open source e-book library management application.  Actually calling it a suite will be more apt as it is packed with so many features.  As it happens in Open source projects, a huge number of people have contributed to the project and it has taken 7 years of work to get to version 1.0.

Calibre supports huge number of e-book formats from LIT through MOBI and PDF to EPUB.  It is not only a e-book reader, but also an e-book format converter.  Practically any form of digital from TXT, RTF, DJVU to HTML and many more can be converted into one of the e-book formats.

Calibre website catalogues its capability into following categories, and as we can see, it is really a one-stop e-book management suite.
  • Library Management;
  • E-book conversion;
  • Syncing to e-book reader devices;
  • Downloading news from the web and converting it into e-book form;
  • Comprehensive e-book viewer;
  • Content server for online access to your book collection.
Calibre is available for Windows (x86 and x64), Mac OSX (Leopard+) and Linux, though on Linux machines +Goyal advices us to install or upgrade from the binary install, instead of the distribution provided package.

Calibre version 1.0, released on 23 Aug 2013 has a couple of new features - the ‘cover grid’ view of library and a faster, smaller, rewritten database backend.
