For sometime now, I have been wondering whether Tamil readers of various magazines, online or paper versions, do appreciate the jokes. To be more precise, whether the readers who read the jokes take note of the joke writer and remember them.
Many of my friends and colleagues do not. Even though they read the magazines regularly, without fail, and do remark upon the jokes therein. But ask them about the one who wrote the joke, or, make a quip ‘that joke should be a fine one, because it was written by so-and-so’, their eyes go blank, to be followed with a strange look.
Ask these same guys (and gals) about some 2nd rate actor in a 3rd grade film, they would wax eloquent - one the scene, dialogues, the supporting cast and the film director, etc.
As many people have remarked, We, Tamils, have a nasty habit of *not* honouring or according respect to creative people, when they are alive. Like famous artists (painters), We, Tamils, go into rapture only after we lose those contributors. Meanwhile, we pass time enamoured with completely worthless and useless characters and their shenanigans.
So, this is my attempt to honour the joke writers in Tamil language by listing out their names. Mind you, this humble list of joke writers in Tamil magazine is *not* a rank or rating list. This is just a list of joke writers I personally remember, consider their writing as good, and in no particular order.
