Mamata Banerjee finds her own medicine distasteful

Ask any citizen in India about Mamata Banerjee and 9 out of 10 people outside West Bengal would label her political style as rabble rousing and confrontational.

That her style is confrontational is undeniable.  Even her own party workers would  concede that Mamata Banerjee’s political life consists only of confrontational, in-the-face, no-holds-barred, brash style of functioning.

As for ‘rabble’, she can rouse her party workers to raise a ruckus and rumble with half a tantrum - does not require a full blown one even.

Thus it came as no surprise that Mamata chose to ignore the advice of security people to use the uncluttered back door of Yojana Bhavan, on her way to meet Montek Singh Ahluwalia of the Planning Commission.  She instead brazenly sought to plough her way through the protestors to the front gate.

That the security people are not used to her unpredictable, confrontational style by now, is surprising and an embarrassing security cockup.  While there was delay in opening the gates to admit Mamata’s contingent, the left wing protestors - who are no less goondas than any others - heckled and gheraoed the Chief Minister and her aides, for the custodial death of student Sudipto Gupta.

In the bargain the kurta of the Finance Minister, Amit Mitra, who accompanied her was torn.  Which proves the point.  West Bengal politics is totally overtaken by goondas and musclemen, with no regard for civility and culture.

The retaliation to the torn kurta was reportedly hurling of bombs at 2 former Ministers of CPM (Abdur Rezzak Mollah and Sudarshan Roy Chowdhury) later in the day.

As if that was not enough, State law minister Chandrima Bhattacharya reportedly hinted the (original) incident would have "frightening consequences".

A really sad state of affairs, seeing that a serving minister, sworn to uphold the Constitution of India and Law and Order,
  • views a torn kurta as a precursor to a frightening situation,
  • but feels nothing about the torn life of a student in police custody.
My disgusted half dithers, ‘For Mamata, student Sudipto Gupta’s death is a petty matter; But a torn kurta of her minister Amit Misra, is shameful!’

What a Poriborton!
