Google Maps Treasure Hunt
A special treasure map mode on Google Maps allows us to explore the hand-drawn-like map with landmarks, hidden treasure chests, and a warning to be “Beware of pirates!” One of the first posts on this Google April Fools’ Day joke was here.
YouTube shutdown
Just before or at the same time, Google also tried a gag in YouTube saying the site is an 8-year old experiment to choose the best video ever made and YouTube will be shutdown on April Fools’ Day. It fell flat. Even the announcement sounded a bit lame.
Google Nose
Then came the quite humorous launch of Google Nose - the new scentsation in search. The announcement says:
- Google Nose leverages new and existing technologies to offer the sharpest olfactory experience available:
- Street Sense vehicles have inhaled and indexed millions of atmospheric miles.
- Android Ambient Odor Detection collects smells via the world's most sensible mobile operating system.
- SMELLCD™ 1.8+ high-resolution compatible for precise and controlled odors.
+Emotion in Google+
The latest as of now is the +Emotion icons in Google+. In the words of +Erik Murphy “To give it a try, simply open one of your pictures in the lightbox, and click the ‘Add emotion’ button at the top left of the screen. We will plumb the emotional depths of everyone in the photo, then summarize their feelings with a beautifully crafted, emotion icon.”
To test whether it really works, I mashed up publicly available photos of the President of India (Pranab Mukherjee), 4 former Prime Ministers (Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao, A.B. Vajpayee) and 3 Prime Minister hopefuls (Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi and J. Jayalalithaa).
And it sure works. Look at the fuming Narendra Modi. (Please also note that I included the Sari clad Tamil and not a Dhoti clad Tamil as PM hopeful)
