Not a pleasant post for the Tamil New Year today.
But what has to be said has to be. Few years back, when I was really afraid whether someone would actually dare attempt to kill me, I was looking for Dead-Man’s Switch. What I was looking for was a way to alert my family when I did not or could not log in to one of my ‘digital’ life after being dead.
For instance, at that point in time, I wanted to write out a ‘WILL’, leaving my estate (whatever meagre it is), to my family as per certain conditional transitions, and also - more important - identify the ‘suspected’ assailant in what would be my ‘dying’ statement. And also leave all my digital estate to my family.
I do not think such a facility - a dead man’s switch - existed anywhere in digital world tilltoday this week. And I will tell you what.
The idiot potential assailant never knew that an ‘Inactive Account Manager’ did not exist, back then. For I let everyone know that if I did not log in to my digital accounts every 12 hours, my ‘WILL’, including my ‘dying’ statement naming the culprit would be unleashed, on the ‘internet’.
It definitely served the purpose - I am still alive, am I not?
:-D
So it was with much glee, I read a couple of hours back that Google has introduced Inactive Accounts Manager, couple of days back. In the words of Google "we are launching a new feature that makes it easy to tell Google what you want done with your digital assets when you die or can no longer use your account."
So what we can do is upload -
a notarised or even a last minute 'will'; or,
a request on whom to be notified in case of death; or,
a whistleblower account of facts,
and such to your own or a special Google account - say Google Drive, which can then be automatically released to family, friends or Transparency International, once we are dead.
:-D
My wicked half whispers, 'Blackmailers have got one side of the deal cut out - how to intimidate without fear of harm. All they need to do is figure out the other side - how to get paid without getting tracked. Wait a minute - isn't there something called Bitcoin?'
... time for mom’s cuppa horlicks --------- wait for update.
