Malaysian GP Vettel Red Bullies Weber

There was intense drama at closing stages of F1 Malaysian Grand Prix as Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel chose to ignore team orders to battle and win an intense last few laps with Mark Webber.

At the Sepang circuit, Webber led after third of the final pit stops and the both the Red Bull drivers were told to maintain their position to the end of the race.  Then Sebastian Vettel chose to ignore the orders and passed Mark Webber after an intense battle with 13 laps to go.

Their rivalry dates to 2010 Turkish Grand Prix when Vettel tried to pass Weber and both crashed their cars.  It is fuelled by Mark Webber’s belief (and by many within the F1 community), that Red Bull racing is more supportive of Vettel than him.

The Malaysian GP at Sepang today was full of drama, anxiety and a little comedy.

The drama started in the very first lap when Vettel and his Red Bull car were involved in an incident with Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari.  Ferrari’s Alonso touched the back of Vettel’s car at turn two which led to the collapse of the Ferrari’s front wing and a crash later.  The other Ferrari driver Filipe Massa finished 5th after the two Red Bulls, followed by the two Mercedes’s.

Nico Rosberg in Mercedes also wanted to pass Lewis Hamilton for a podium finish, but was told to hold back and he at least obeyed team orders.  Hamilton himself said Nico deserved the place in the podium, afterwards.

With such drama, tragedy was not found wanting.  Force India who had a good finish in Albert Park, Australia, went back to their usual non-finishing positions without points at Sepang.  What else!

As I wrote last week after the Australian GP, the Red Bulls proved they are quicker than others at Sepang, Malaysia.  And Mercedes have picked up the pace.

The lighter moments was provided by Lewis Hamilton, who while coming in for his 2nd pit stop, drove into the pit of his former team McLaren, before being waved onward to the Mercedes pits.
LOL.

Here is a screen grab of Alonso’s Ferrari making that fateful touch to the back of  Vettel’s Red Bull.

*Correction:  Alonso touched Vettel’s Red Bull, not Webber’s, as posted earlier.
