To the surprise of almost everyone, Kimi Raikonen in his Lotus won comfortably the season opener Rolex Australian GP 2013 at Albert Park. The people who have been surprised must include the Sky Sports F1's finest - Martin Brundle, Damon Hill, Simon Lazenby, Natalie Pinkham and David Croft.
Kimi Raikonen in his Lotus won comfortably, outpacing the second placed Fernando Alonso in his Ferrari F138 by a huge 12 seconds. No doubt the two pit stop strategy of Lotus played well when compared to the three tire changes adopted by almost everyone else. But Kimi Raikonen’s win cannot be dismissed solely to the two pit stop strategy as his team mate Romain Grosjean ended up scoring only the last point by finishing 10th.
Another interesting point is the Force India, which again wasn’t given much chance by the famous five, ended up scoring 10 points in total. It might not be anywhere near the podium coming in 7 and 8, but the good news for Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta is both their cars finished with points.
The Tifosi finally have something to cheer as Ferrari with their F138 head into the next F1 GP race at Sepang, Malaysia placed on top of the constructors championship. Contrast it with last year, when Ferrari slid into Sepang with worrying mechanical problems after finishing fifth (Alonso) and a retirement (Massa) at Albert Park.
But it is no time to dismiss Red Bull. What the Rolex Australian GP 2013 has shown is the Red Bull is the quickest car, first and second in practice and qualifying. Their race might not have been as stunning, but they are not about to be written off.
So all in all, an exciting F1 Grand Prix season is in the offing.
:-)
The next race is on 22 to 24 March - the F1 Petronas Malaysian GP at Sepang circuit, Kuala Lumpur.
