Ever since the controversy on the sexual misconduct of Cardinal Keith O’Brien broke out 10 days back, he had my sympathy. Really! By now, we in India - especially in the southern parts - are mostly attuned to the sexual peccadilloes of the so called men-of-God.
We had Premananda whose prowess was only written about. In digital age we literally had a bed time view of Nityananda’s antics. [Forget those Paris Hilton videos, the alleged Nityananda-Ranjitha videos are more entertaining].
:-P
My personal view about the men-of-God of every hue and colour is to be careful, not trust blindly and be sceptical. Their sexual preferences, IMHO, are their personal affair (no pun intended) and don’t serve as a mark of their character.
But today (yesterday night), when Cardinal Keith O’Brien, who was Britain’s most senior Roman Catholic before resignation, admitted to sexual misconduct and inappropriate behaviour, I was dashed.
Not because Keith O’Brien had behaved in a sexually inappropriate or predatory manner towards fellow priests, some 30 or so years back.
But because all along the trusted Cardinal espoused strong views against LGBT, euthanasia and abortion. Keith O’Brien actually called gay marriage a “grotesque subversion”, while all along engaging in gay activity.
To add insult to injury, Keith O’Brien strongly denied the allegations by a former priest and 3 serving priests when the scandal broke, and was getting ready to travel to Rome to vote on the next Pope.
That bloody liar and hypocrite. No wonder he was shouting so much against gays. Perhaps, from now on, whenever anyone expresses strong views against LGBT, we have to question their sexual morals and preferences.
