The Racketeer rockets you along

The Racketeer by John Grisham is a thriller entertainer.  This novel is not a legal thriller for which Grisham became famous for.  The Racketeer is more of a fun thriller, even more so than his last novel, The Litigators.

In The Racketeer we are taken along for a great, suspense-filled ride by the main character Malcolm Bannister, a convicted lawyer, who schemes to get out of prison and make his pay day.

The story is well woven with unexpected twists and we are left curious to see where the next page and the turn in the plot will take us to.  The mystery in the novel is provided by Malcolm Bannister himself, who never discloses his elaborate plan, but reveals just the next step, which keep us engaged.

There are several parts which are boring, especially the attempted description of Prison Life.  If we need to read about life in prison, there are the Prison Diaries by Jeffrey Archer - not The Racketeer.  But John Grisham with his mastery of writing quickly manages to re-engage us with the story.

There is one area where even Grisham is unable to make us go along - in his portrayal of the FBI as a somewhat better version of Keystone Kops.

If we suspend disbelief and get into the mood of the novel, The Racketeer is a definite good read.

The Racketeer would be in tune with the mood of the upcoming holiday season.
