At last, the Indian Cricket fans hear the news they've been eagerly waiting for. But as it happens, there is good news and there is bad news. The good news is that Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has finally decided to retire from ODI Cricket.
The bad news is that Tendulkar will / may continue to play in Test Cricket. What most likely happened - this is pure speculation on my part, based on the morning rumours - is that the selectors have finally decided to drop him from the ODI Team for Pakistan.
Remember the selectors are in a huddle from 8 O'clock today morning to select the team for the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan.
Either the selectors have let Sachin Tendulkar know that his place in the ODI team is in jeopardy and Tendulkar must have told the selectors to hold back the announcement of the team for a couple of hours to allow him to announce his retirement or their is some precipitous coincidence. You can take your pick.
However it played out, it is a welcome decision and good riddance. Personally Tendulkar should have retired on a high - after the fantastic ODI Cricket World Cup victory last year.
It is always painful to see legends lose their skills and make a mockery of themselves, their fans and the sport-lovers, at the fag end of their career. Though people have forgotten it, both Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar also outlived their invitation and were willing to do only after snide questions were raised in the newspapers.
Sachin Tendulkar as he overshadowed these cricket legends on the field, has also overshadowed them in this respect. Instead of gentle, and snide remarks, he has hung around till open calls have been sounded for him to quit.
BTW that there have been calls for awarding Bharat Ratna on him is old news. My question is are we going to see a Goodle Doodle on this?
:-P
