Exactly one year after Iran brought down a US Sentinel UAV, Iran has once again claimed that it has captured an unmanned US drone flying over its airspace. There has been no official comment from the US.
Exactly an year back On 4 December 2011, an American Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was captured by Iranian forces near the city of Kashmar. The Iranians claimed that the UAV was brought down by their Cyber warfare unit which took over control of the aircraft and safely landed it.
Last month the US alleged that the Iranians shot at a US surveillance drone flying in international airspace. As usual, the Iranians claimed the drone was spying over their territory.
Regarding today’s incident, the state broadcaster IRIB claimed "The unmanned US drone patrolling Persian Gulf waters, performing reconnaissance and gathering intel, was captured as soon as it entered Iranian airspace.” The report did not elaborate on how the aircraft was "captured".
So on the day of the RQ-170 incident, we have one more capture by Iran of an American drone, this time of the smaller ScanEagle. ScanEagle is a small, low-cost, long-endurance drone built by Insitu, a subsidiary of Boeing. The ScanEagle is a design based on a commercial UAV that was used by fishermen look for fish.
:-P
