All these years I had absolutely no problem with comments - to be more precise, with spam comments - for the simple reason this blog wasn’t scoring high enough on Google PR or Alexa Rank to warrant the attention of spammers.
But the improved PR (and Alexa Rank) after recent updates has brought in an unwanted headache - comment spam.
Several months back I signed up for Disqus commenting system. It was more in the hope of attracting readers than discouraging spam (there was practically no spam at that time).
:-)
There is no doubt that Disqus is a great anti-spam technique. Even the anonymous comments are all relevant to the article and cannot be considered spam.
When people post comments for some link-juice, it is not a bother if they say some good things, which may be generic and only obliquely refer to the blog/post. For e.g., comments like ‘This is a nice Template’ or ‘Good Tips. I would follow it in my own blog’, etc., are OK and can be left in.
But over the last few weeks, these spammers have somehow found a way to get around Disqus and post comments directly to Blogger.
Just look at this: from shoes, lamps, bags to Viagra and what not. Somehow, their comments do not appear on Disqus but are being posted directly into Blogger.
Thankfully, the Blogger spam filter is quite good and directly tags them as spam.
There is a technical explanation for (some) comments by-passing Disqus to be posted in Blogger. If someone posts from a mobile, the comments go directly into Blogger and not into Disqus.
Disqus is still not perfected for mobile templates, hence there is this quirk for mobile readers. And the reason why switching off comments in Blogger dashboard - settings is not recommended.
But looking at these spam comments, they don’t look like being posted from mobile devices. Which leaves me with the suspicion that these guys have somehow found out a way (a tool?) to bypass Disqus and post directly to Blogger.
Sheesh! Wonder if anyone has a solution.
