Google Doodle celebrates Rodin’s Thinker

The famous ‘Thinker’ sculpture is the motif of today’s Google’s celebration of Auguste Rodin’s 172nd birthday with a Doodle.

Auguste Rodin was a French Sculptor born on the 12th of November 1840 and left this world on the 17th of November 1917, with a stunning legacy.  For Auguste Rodin is honoured as the progenitor of modern sculpture in the art industry and in todays Google Doodle.

Naked human form is nothing new in sculpture.  The Khajuraho ‘Kama Sutra’ sculptures are only one example of them in India.  More ancient is the famous  naked ‘dancing girl’ bronze sculpture (which we drooled over as kids) from the Mohenjo-daro Indus Valley excavations.

Not that the Western civilized sculptures had any clothes on.  The marble Venus from ancient Greece is a prime example.

The obsession with naked ‘divine’ female form world over, even in pre-historic times was revealed just six months back in Abri Castanet (and many years back in Cave of La Madeleine).

But Auguste Rodin is credited with bringing naked human form in sculpture.  And celebrated today with a Google Doodle.
