Tropical Cyclone 02B ‘NILAM’ approaching Chennai

The 4 hours since the last update, JTWC warns that the Tropical Cyclone 02B ‘Nilam’ has picked up movement and is now heading for the environs of Chennai.

In their latest TC Warning 02B NILAM number 008, they’ve warned that the Cyclone’s estimated centre has been relocated further North and the forecast track shows the Cyclone likely to make landfall just South of Chennai.

The bulletin 008 was released just about ~20 minutes before this post at 31/0900Z (1430 IST).  They also project the TC 02B Nilam to make its closest approach to Chennai and make landfall at about 31 / 13Z (around 1830 IST), at a distance of just 24 NM (~ 45 km) from Chennai city central point.

Whoo! Whoo! Chennai.  Brace up for Nilam.

Meanwhile the IMD website is sluggish - guess they’re getting their servers hammered.
:-D

Here is the Radar map at 15:20 IST - about ~15 minutes before this post.  See the winds in cyclonic circulation.  If you don’t know what those symbols means - they are called Wind Barbs and they indicate the direction from which the wind is blowing.

The small spurs on the sides indicate the speed in knots.  The smallest is 5 knots per hour.  The next is 10 knots.  The projected storm centre is marked in off-white, just off the coast of Pondicherry.
