In 2012 the Navarathri pooja has started with a slight confusion. Normally, the Navarathri starts on the first day after Amavasya and continues for 9 days with the VijayaDashami on the 10th day.
This year, the VijayaDashami occurs on 24th October 2012, whereas the Amavasya is observed today - 15th October 2012. Normally the Navarathri pooja should start on 16th October 2012. Which leaves us with just 8 days, to complete the 9 days puja before Dasara. This is because the Tamil calendar is a Luni-Solar Calendar.
The solution is to do the first day’s pooja on the morning of 15th October and the second day’s pooja on the evening of the same day - 15th October. From 16th October 2012 to continue with the 3rd day’s pooja.
People who cannot do poojas on all days should atleast try to do them on the 7th, 8th and 9th days. The Ninth day is Saraswathi Pooja or Ayudha Pooja. The 10th day is the VijayaDashami, which is celebrated elaborately, especially by the Kannadigas, Gujarathis and Maharashtrians and why it is also called Dasara.
I would try to type out the full pooja for the Saraswati Pooja scheduled on 23rd October 2012 well in time.
The 9 avatars of Devi which are to be venerated and the preferred Naivedhyam, Sundals and the preferred colour of Saris for women to wear on each day and the naivedhyams prescribed here are the simple ones - basically rice preparations so that everyone will be able to prepare them without problem. The sundals are the recommended for the specific day (if possible).
