Cleaning up broken links boosts Alexa rank

For last 4 weeks I have been slogging through the blog, locating and fixing (basically removing) all the dead, broken, and otherwise mangled links.  It is exactly a month from the date I took that decision which has vexed me with so much of boring, donkey work.

But my friend - an SEO expert - did warn me about that.  Then again, he also said that the effort would be well worth it.  He said broken links are one of the worst faults for a website or a blog and they are one of the major case of low ratings.

He said that though monekyshine nutworks has almost 100% original and unique content (the ‘almost’ because most of the images are courtesy images), the blog as a whole ‘leaks’ ratings because of the broken, dead and ‘do follow’ links.  He also suggested modifying the style of writing, and even splitting the blog into 2 or 3 linked blogs - more on his suggestions later.

Though it was a case of bitter medicine, for two reasons, I decided to take his advice.  The first bitterness was what every blogger would feel when some ‘expert’ chooses to critique it.  It is not a pleasant feeling when someone takes apart something which you have spent time planning and building it up.

The second was sheer amount of manual labour involved in detecting and correcting the dead links.
But it turned out to be true.  On 08th September, the global Alexa Rank for this rank was around 3 million plus.  The Alexa rank for India blog was 200,000 plus.  If we recall that there are supposed to be around 500,000 plus blogs active in India, it is a pathetic score.

Today, almost 90% of the dead or broken links have been removed or corrected and the Alexa rank for this blog has zoomed.  The Global Alexa rank for this monkeyshine nutworks has zoomed past the 900,000 mark.  The India rank has broken into the sub 50,000 rank.

I think once the remaining 10% or so of the dead links are cleaned up, the ranking will zip past another 100,000 places globally and 10,000 places for India blogs.

Which will leave the huge task of pushing it further up, into the sub 250,000 globally and sub 1000 for India blogs.  For that, only content, comfort, continuity and consistency will help.  (Yeah!  those are some of the terms used by my SEO friend).
:-D
