What is new in Google Chrome 22 - eye candy

Google has released version 22 of its Chrome browser in the stable channel, 2 days ago.  The Google Chrome 22 has some 50 odd security fixes and has many enhancements for gamers, especially those playing WebGL games.

Before we go into the technology, let us see the differences in the way we will henceforth interact with Google Chrome 22 - the so called eye-candy features.
  1. The wrench that isn’t there - to be replaced by …
    • what is it?
      • a sandwich?
      • a hot dog?
      • child’s scribble? or
      • just 3 parallel lines?
    • Whatever, it is being hailed as making the Windows Chrome more ‘compatible’ or ‘in-line’ with the Chrome Android (& iOS) versions.  Which makes me laugh.  Substituting 3 lines (instead of dots as in Android) for a wrench icon is going to make a Windows browser ‘fall in line’ with its Linux versions?
    • Sheesh! :-P
  2. The ‘About’ page has really become a page - instead of the pop-up dialog box of earlier versions.  The ‘Help’ page (underneath the ‘History’, ‘Extensions’, and ‘Settings’ pages) also acts as the fully functional ‘About’ page in Chrome 22, and the usual ‘Get Help’ and ‘Report bug’ buttons are also there.
  3. Two other differences in interaction are carry-overs from Chrome 21.  A slightly redesigned ‘Spy’ icon for indicating ‘incognito’ mode.
  4. The ability to drag-and-drop whole folders (instead of just files) into the browser.  A huge help in uploading photos to Flickr or a handful of documents to Google Drive (Google Docs).
As for implementing new technology and improved gaming, there are two:
  • a brand new ‘Pointer Lock’ or ‘Mouse Lock’ API in Chrome 22, and
  • the continuation from Chrome 21 of the WebRTC API.
We will take a look at them in What is new in Google Chrome 22 - new techniques
