In a long overdue move, the government of Bihar has decided to computerize (which means digitize) the information regarding the inmates in the state prisons and the entry and egress of their visitors. The database is also to contain the complete criminal history of the convict, which they hope will aid the Police in their law enforcement tasks.
It is akin to have a state wide criminal database, which, to the thinking of the Bihar government, which primarily means the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, will help in its effort to ensure a peaceful, law abiding and disciplined Bihar.
Whether or not it is implemented and whether implemented in the sense intended is left to see. But what gets my goat is that the same CM howled and protested when the Union government tried to implement such a setup regarding Terrorists. Almost 4 months to the day, the same man who wants to setup a state-wide criminal database vehemently opposed the centre’s attempt to setup a nationwide terrorist database.
Strange are the ways in the corridors of power, indeed. Anyway, here is a take off on the ‘application’ or ‘intake’ form (imaginary), which the prisoners would be asked to fill up in future.
