If the push-me-pull-you haphazard policies and practices of the administration under the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh needed any more instances to ridicule, it was unveiled yesterday. While the Chief Economic Advisor to the PM, Kaushik Basu was blabbering just 2 days ago on the need to reduce oil subsidy, the Petroleum companies unveiled a LPG transparency web portal yesterday, which allows anyone to check on the LPG refill booking, and delivery on anyone else.
Throwing open the database like what the oil companies have done has a few benefits. It allows for the possibility of the public donning the role of the watchdog - in a sense, crowd sourcing the vigilance function.
And barely a few hours after my comment, the proof is here. People using the LPG portal have uncloaked a massive misuse of the subsidized LPG cylinders by the politicians, especially the so called VVIPs. It includes Minister, Member of Parliaments, Industrialists and even the Vice-President of India.
Just take a look at the list of the VVIPs misusing the subsidized LPG refills:

- Navin Jindal, MP - a whopping 369 refills, with 2 connections (which in itself is not permitted) - of which 1 in the name of his late father;
- A. Raja, while cooling his heels in Tihar, used 89 refills;
- K.G. Balakrishnan, former CJI, took home 79 refills;
