There is only one thing certain as on 14 May, (12 noon) as to who would not make it to the IPL 5 playoffs.
The two teams Deccan Chargers and Pune Warriors have no chance at all. But the problem is they have 3 matches between them which if they win, can throw a spanner into the other 7 team’s chances.
In Chennai, there is a hot new topic (as it might be elsewhere in India), on the chances of Chennai Super Kings making it to the playoffs. The permutations and combinations are mind boggling.
People talk about matches played, yet to be played, winning the yet to be played matches and what not. Even worse, people have no differentiation between possibilities and probabilities.
Like when a top notch team like Delhi Daredevils (DD), who top the table with 9 wins out of 13 matches play against Deccan Chargers (DC), with 2 wins in 14 matches, it is still *possible* that DC can win. But is it probable? The probability is that DD will win against DC. BTW, those 2 teams will not meet in this IPL as of now, as they’ve already played each other twice.
After breaking my head for the whole day about how to put together something where people could actually see what the winning combinations can result in,I’ve put together the following gsheet (Google Doc Spreadsheet).
There are restrictions on what Google forms can and cannot do - and that is the reason why I ended up with a headache trying to implement a gform - and it is back to simple gsheet for now.
Again Google spreadsheets or gsheets do not have a straightforward technique to protect cells against data ‘input’ or interference like in MS Excel and hence the current one is open to disruption. Tomorrow I plan to refine it, by making two sheets with one ‘holding’ data and one just allowing for ‘wins’ and displaying the results - the calculation to be done on a gsheet, in the background, ‘protected’.
For now, here is it:
BTW if you want to insert a spreadsheet in your blog, get the iframe code, by ‘publishing’ the webpage -> embed html and (most important) pasting the code in ‘html’ or ‘source’ tab.
Update (27 May 2012):
Read the preview of CSK vs KKR finals.
Update (16 May 2012):
There is an option to hide ‘formulas’ in zoho sheet. When applied it doesn’t allow the formula cells to be edited/overwritten, even on the displayed sheet. Whether intended or not, it offers a (small) level of protection by effectively ‘locking’ the cells with formulas.
-end of update-
Great, isn’t it? The best news is that the zoho sheet is free and an account can be opened with the same Google ID.
Enter your prediction only in the coloured cells - 2 for Win, 0 for Lose and 1 for Tie (for Team 1 only). The other teams points and the projected totals will show up at the bottom points table and you can see which 4 teams will top the table to go on to the playoffs.
The beauty is you can toggle the result of a particular match and see how it will affect the line-up. Great work Zoho team!
Update (15 May 2012):
I’ve put together the following zoho sheet. Try as I might, the gsheet could not be made interactive. And if I open the gsheet to everyone, the chances of the ‘original’ or ‘master’ worksheet getting overwritten, disrupted, or corrupted are ever present. There is absolutely no way to protect the ‘default’ data in the sheet. However, the zoho sheet offers such a built in ability.
Here you can see the zoho sheet embedded and displayed. If you want to play with it, ‘click’ on the ‘Click to Edit’ button and the zoho sheet is ready for play. In addition, whatever happens to the individual sheet, the original, master sheet remains protected - the default values aren’t overwritten.
-end of update-
Cheers!
