How does the Indian Soap Nut tree know it is Easter?

It has been 3 years since I have been posting photo records on the behaviour of the Indian Soap Nut tree (Genus Sapindus) in front of my apartment complex.  I planted it in May 2004 during a tree planting drive and it is a running joke among my friends that it is the chosen tree for me to ‘haunt’, presumably because we are so naughty that St. Peter would not let us even look at the pearly gates.
;-)

BTP, 2010 was the year the tree matured and started to flower.  Since I started to blog in late 2009, that was also the first year to post about the tree.

In 2010, the Indian soap nut tree started to shed its leaves on Good Friday. By late evening, the tree was almost bare.  Yet on Easter Sunday, which was on 4th of April that year, the tree re-grew all the leaves and 3 days later, started to flower.  The photos are in this post.

Last year 2011, the Easter Sunday was on 24th April.  But the tree started to shed quite early.  On 11th March it was almost bare and 3 days later it was lush, hiding the building behind.  Again, 3 days later the tree started to flower.  The photos are in this post.

This year, the Easter Sunday is today - 08th of April.  But for the last 2 weeks or so, the tree had started to flower.  Me and my friends started to speculate that the tree is becoming a ‘teen’ and is probably suffering from hormone imbalance.  That may be also the reason it forgot to shed this year.
Now you know why St. Peter might consider us naughty.
:-(

But the tree suddenly seems to have realised that it is time to regenerate, hailing the resurrection of the Lord on Easter; it has started to shed leaves.
