Government removes SMS cap after 3 months

Remember the post TRAI should be renamed ITIAT, where I had highlighted the stupid, short-sighted moves of the Telecom Ministry/Department/Regulator to restrict 100 SMS per day per SIM card?

Apart from the idiocy of restricting SMS numbers even for personal use, I had explicitly highlighted that Medium and Small businesses rely on SMS alerts to send out timely information to their customers.  Within a few days they raised the limit to 200 SMS per day per SIM.

That was in Oct 2011.  After 3 months to the day, the Wise men of the Telecom Department have woken up to the vexing issue of ‘alerts’.  3 days back they announced that there would be no SMS cap for sending ‘transactional messages’.

Transactional messages “… include providing details of driver or taxi on booking of radio taxi, tentative date of delivery of goods, tentative date of attending complaint, contact details of person attending the complaint etc,…”

I wonder how many submissions and hours have been spent over the past couple of months to correct the idiocy?

What I mean is that, this ‘TRAI’ thingy is not another writer of position paper or an ordinary blogger like mad.madrasi.  It is a constituted arm of the Govt. of India and a Regulator of a vast national resource to boot.
  • Do people just wake up one fine morning and issue diktats?
  • Don’t they have the basic sense to even think a few minutes before saying or doing something?
  • Even when a decision is arrived at, don’t they have any mechanism to carry out a quick analysis on the effects and repercussions a decision (any decision) would make?
Either the answers are Yes, No, No; or else these wise guys who sit and lord over the nation, actually don’t have any idea of the realities on the ground.  Are they walking on (hot) air?
