As posted earlier, the Tropical Cyclone 06B named ‘Thane’ has given the miss to my hometown Chennai and crossed the coast today morning. While the IMD and everyone else went nuts screaming that the Cyclone Thane would cross the coast between Cuddalore and Nellore, the Cyclone managed to pull a fast one (no pun intended).
Perusing Weather Underground, I was lucky to catch the picture of the storm actually crossing the coast today morning.
A word of caution though, what the picture shows (as of this post) is the centre of the storm - the eye - crossing the coast/shoreline. There is still the rear of the storm which too has those gusting winds, yet to cross the coast. Thus technically, the storm has not ‘cleared’ the coast and there is still potential for havoc.
Whatever, seeing that the storm is passing over Mayiladuthurai-Thanjavur towns, the paddy and other cultivated fields must be inundated with water. So the people of TN should shore up for lesser than normal rice production and procurement this ‘Samba’ season - keeping in mind that the cultivation patterns in my home state TN is slightly different from other parts of the country. It is not only the paddy fields, but also sugarcane, maize, turmeric and banana fields which are going to be hit.
My Mischievous half murmurs, ‘Thank God we don’t have a Presidential form of Government for an uncaring individual to comment ‘Heckua job Thane!’’
