It appears that the fiction novels of the series kind in 2011 fall into two categories. Either the writers have positioned their regular characters to move on and allow younger characters to take over or they write such drab stories that the reader feels it is time to move on.

Thankfully ‘The Drop’ by Michael Connelly is neither of those. Though it does appear that Michael Connelly is planning for Harry Bosch to take the back stage in a few years - five looks to be good number - as Bosch is in line to get his DROP extension for 5 years. The time frame would also fit in nicely for his daughter Maddie to take over from him, as she would be 20 years old by then!
Whatever the author has planned, novel #17 of the Harry Bosch series ‘The Drop’ is as good as it comes. The last couple of Harry Bosch novels seemed to be wandering around aimlessly, but with ‘The Drop’, Connelly has brought Bosch back to his best.
As is usual for Connelly the characterization doesn’t have flaws, the story is crisp and the reader is kept enthralled. Thankfully, the dark, depressive mood of the earlier Bosch novels seem to have disappeared of late and so the reader isn’t left with a sour taste after finishing the novel.
The Drop by Michael Connelly, featuring Harry Bosch in his 17th outing (in a novel) is great entertainment. Definitely a story I would recommend everyone to read; one of the best novels to come out in 2011.
