Son, this is a Stone to avoid

The latest Stone Barrington novel by Stuart Woods, Son of Stone, was the last of the 3 novels I read over the last week(end).  And ‘Son of Stone’ is the one I never finished.

Stone Barrington novels are what they are - easy, light reading which doesn’t tax our mind too much, offering entertainment and some diversion, for the times we’re -
  • pooled in the airport lounge, or
  • lounging at a airy poolside
This one is neither.  Son of Stone makes us feel like -
  • barfing into a trash bag, or
  • trashing it in a garbage bag
The attempted lame word play is because the dreaded ‘Arrington-Barrington’ does happen.  To make matters worse, the son of Stone, Peter Calder/Barrington, is so perfect, he makes Harry Potter look naughty.

If it is the intention of the writer to spin off a series about the sons of Stone and Dino, he could have done it with a short story, instead of this whipped up cream and cane sugar.

The Stone Barrington series appears to he going nowhere and we have to admit that there are unexplored, myriad situations worth exploiting in a ‘Vince Calder’ themed, Hollywood based novels.

The only good thing about Son of Stone is there are no boring ‘insights’ into the airplanes or boats (till the page I read - and I couldn’t get past 110 or so).

Even if it is the last book left in a over-crowded airport because of Bangkok floods or Qantas flight disruption, I would advise you to save your money.
