Virgil ‘that effing’ Flowers is back in the fifth outing of his own and by God what an exciting story John Sandford has spun with him. Unlike his other stories Virgil does not score in this one, displaying signs of maturity (?)
The story construction is good with a couple of sub-plots. Just when we think that Flowers has reached the end of his adventure and wondering what Sandford has done with the rest of the book, the story twists and turns. Point to note is the skill of the storyteller in not making the readers feel that the twists are an anti-climax.
The turns are subtle, gripping, and pulls us along till we suddenly realise that the story-line itself has changed. At no point in the novel do we get the feeling that the plot has lost its thrill and we are just plodding along.
Of the 3 novels of fiction I read over the last week(end), this was the one that I never wanted to put down. A bit late into the night the eyes started to droop, but still wanted to keep on and finish it. When I could not manage it, the first chore next morning (after fetching milk) was to sit down for an hour to finish it off. It was such a good read.
Virgil is his usual self, stirring the pot up with leaks to the press, trying to flush the criminal out. In this case, the criminal is equal to the task and is adept at checking Virgil at every turn - till the last fork, that is!
All said, a definite, ‘must read’ for fiction lovers.
