TRAI should be renamed ITIAT

It is high time the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is renamed as India Telecommunication Implementing AuthoriTy (ITIAT).  If your choose to read it as IDIOT, don’t blame me.

The reason is the 12 day old rule that every SIM card would be allowed to send only 100 SMS per day.  Sorry, not ‘all’ SIM cards, but only those for the use of individuals and small businesses.  The ISPs, the telemarketing companies, etc. are free to send as much as they want.  The move is to curtail – believe it or not – bulk SMS marketing attempts by individuals.

Apart from the teens who are ripped about it, it would impact on service by some businesses which have become essential, and safety issues.

Within a day of the announcement a 70 year old building collapsed in the National Capital Region of Delhi killing 7 and injuring 19.  It happened around 2000 hrs (08.00 PM) and reports indicated that around 29 people were trapped in the debris.
  • Let us imagine that a similar incident occurs again in the night and one of the 2 dozen trapped wants to call out for help but cannot – her jaw is broken – but has her cell phone handy.  What if she is staring at a girder which is sure to fall and crush her when a part of a collapsed wall is removed?  Which is imminent as Firefighters are attempting to lift the collapsed wall unaware of her situation?
  • SMS reminders have become essential for many chores:
    • for paying ISP, Telephone bills by local collection point
    • for servicing bikes and pollution under control checks by local service station
    • for paying Life Insurance and Bike Insurance premiums by a local insurance agent
    • for paying municipal taxes by local municipal collection agent
    • Such guys rely on an MS Access driven database hooked on to a mobile, usually Nokia, using the SMS sending capability of Nokia PC Suite.
  • As for the teens and the brat pack – coeds say their average SMS volume is 250 to 350/day.  Which sounds true if we assume 12 hours as their ‘free time’ – 300 SMS in 720 minutes.
If they thought they can strangle the kids, they don’t know them.  What this stupid restriction has done is spurred kid’s interest
  • in smart phones
  • in dual SIM phones
  • in getting cheap 2nd phone
  • in acquiring 2 or 3 SIM cards
  • worse, in trying to acquire demo SIM cards (the restriction free cards provided by Telecom companies to their agents)
Heck of job guys – you’re teaching the kids to become more manipulative - to put it diplomatically.

Update:  Took them couple of days to increase cap to 200 SMS and 3 months to remove cap on transaction messages.  Did they read this post? :-P
