Whether or not true, some recent actions by politicians as a class has done nothing to dispel that notion.
In the US we have
- John Ensign in alleged fiscal violation during his extramarital affair with Cynthia Hampton
- Tom DeLay allegedly laundered money with Jack Abramoff
- John Edwards in alleged fiscal violation during his extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter
- Arnold Schwarzenegger’s affair and love child with Mildred Baena
- The 1st British MP David Chaytor actually jailed in the Parliamentary expenses scandal
- The French President Nicolas Sarkozy has an albatross around his neck with the Bettencourt cash scandal
- The former French Finance Minister and the present IMF Chief Christine Lagarde alleged to have abused her position to favourably settle a case involving Sarkozy’s friend Bernard Tapie
- Not to say anything about Silvio Berlusconi’s bunga bunga parties
Thus it seems the contention that there is some truth in the above axiom - at least some of the time.
